Methods of Calculating the Weights of Wire Cloth

The weight of any size and kind of cloth not listed on these pages may readily be calculated by means of the following formulae:

  • Square Mesh Cloth Center to Center
    (2400 W M)2 / [1+(DM)2]

    M = Mesh
    W = Weight of bare wire per lin. ft.
    D = Diameter of wire

    Special Note: Where the size of wire is equal to, or is greater than the width of opening, a factor of error, which cannot be eliminated, develops in the above formula. To compensate for this unavoidable defection, in all such cases and also one size lighter in each specific instance an arbitrary 5% has been deducted from the full calculated weight in arriving at the standard net weights as recorded on these pages.

  • Space or Clear Opening Cloth
    Employ same formula as above, expressing the size of Space or Clear Opening in terms of Mesh, center to center. For example: 1 1/4" Space, .192" Wire is equivalent to .6935 Mesh (1.25 plus .192 divided into 1).
